Divinity Manifesting in the Colors of Nature

The greatest uniqueness of the Roopakalam lies in its purity and strict adherence to tradition. Absolutely no artificial colors are used for this. When this Roopakalam, drawn entirely with completely natural five-colored powders (Panchavarna), emerges in the Pattambalam (ritual hall), the temple atmosphere fills with spiritual energy. Riding upon a wild buffalo, wielding the short sticks bestowed by the Mother of the Universe (Jagadambika), and charging forward to destroy evil—when the fierce, piercing eyes of the Lord appear in the Kalam, any devotee who arrives there will unknowingly stand with folded hands in reverence.

The Melodies of Kalampattu That Burn Away Sorrows

It is the poojas (rituals) held after the completion of the Kalam drawing that touch the minds of the devotees the most deeply. Accompanied by traditional musical instruments, when the glories of the Lord’s incarnation and his heroic deeds are sung as Thottam (sacred invocatory songs), it does not merely reach the ears of the devotees, but rather rains down into their anxiety-filled hearts like the holy water of solace.

There is an unwavering faith that if one surrenders their haunting severe afflictions (doshas) and domestic unrest before this Roopakalam and prays, the Lord will instantly resolve them. When we look at that radiant, holy form and pray with a melting heart, we can experience the darkness in our minds lifting and a new path of light emerging.

The Heart-Melting Ritual of Erasing the Kalam

The most heart-touching moment of the Roopakalam is at its very end. After all the rituals, there is a ceremony where the Velichappadu (the oracle), who has invoked the divine energy of the Lord,performs a sacred trance dance and erases this Kalam. Though a slight ache may arise in the devotees’ hearts as they watch the divine form fade away before their very eyes, there is a profound spiritual truth behind it.

In that moment, the Lord is actually wiping away the ego within us and all the miseries that haunt us with His holy feet. Even as kalam is erased, that imperishable form of the Lord permanently takes residence in the hearts of the devotees. The self-confidence and peace of mind one attains when smearing the multi-colored powder from that kalam onto the forehead are beyond words. It is
