Kuttichathan Temple Thrissur: First Visit Guide & Offerings

Standing at a temple gate for the first time and not knowing what to do?

Many devotees feel the same way, and it’s okay. You don’t need to know every ritual to visit the Kuttichathan Temple in Thrissur. Here is a simple guide to what happens, what to offer, and how to pray at Kanadikavu Temple in Peringottukara.

First visit, step by step

Call the temple to check timings, then choose an offering such as a ghee lamp or pushpanjali. You can book it online or at the temple office. When you reach the temple, stand before Lord Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy and pray quietly. The temple’s priests perform the pooja on your behalf, so you can just focus on your prayers.

The Lord at Kanadikavu

The main deity is Kanadikavu Shree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy, worshipped here for over 600 years. Devotees come to him with worries about health, family, enemies and difficult times in life. The temple also honours the 390 Kuttichathans, Bhadrakali, Bhuvaneshwari Devi, Subramanya Swami, Kukshi Kalpam, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi and Brahmarakshas.

Offerings at Vishnumaya Temple Thrissur

Offerings are called vazhipadu, and the temple lists them on kanadikavu.com. For a first visit, simple ones work well, such as a ghee lamp, a pushpanjali (an offering of flowers), an archana (the chanting of your name and prayer), or camphor and agarbathi. You can also offer sweets like milk payasam, or appam, ada and more. If you would like something larger, you can ask about the Roopakkalam, Guruthi Kalasham or Brahmavellattu.

Choosing a day to visit

Any day is welcome. Tuesdays have special poojas such as the Guruthi Kalasham and Nivedhya Pooja. The Amavasi Sakthi Pooja is held on new moon days, and the Pournami Shaktheya Pooja on full moon days. Special pooja days may be busier, so call ahead if you prefer a quieter visit.

Booking poojas online

You can book poojas and offerings at kanadikavu.com or arrange them at the temple. If you cannot travel, the priests will offer the pooja for you.

Food at the temple

Annadanam, the offering of food, is served daily so that no one leaves hungry.
