The holy Konnacharyar was a supreme devotee of Lord Vishnumaya. In order to win a war, he performed rigorous penance and intense prayers seeking the presence of the fierce deity. Piercing through the wildness of the dense forest, that divine light appeared. Pleased by the sincere penance of His devotee, Lord Vishnumaya Swami granted him a vision, appearing before the Acharya riding on His vehicle—a buffalo resembling a solid black rock. In the heart of that forest, where even wild animals trembled in fear, Konnacharyar folded his hands and bowed down in tears upon seeing the radiant glow on the Lord's face. He humbly pleaded that the Lord's presence was needed on earth to bring an end to the miseries and hardships of his people. With deep reverence and devotion, Konnacharyar escorted the Swami, who had graciously agreed to fulfil His devotee's wish, to the land of Peringottukara. As he installed the Lord in his own Illam (ancestral home) and began his worship, the entire region was filled with a divine aura and thus emerged the Sree Vishnumaya Swami Temple. When Konnacharyar's magical prowess merged with the immense divine energy and power of Lord Vishnumaya Swami, it brought light into the lives of countless ordinary people who came burdened with illnesses and suffering. This heartwarming story of the soulful bond between the devotee and the Lord is what remains the very foundation of the divine presence of Vishnumaya in the Kanadikav family of Peringottukara even today.

In Rudravana, before the demon army charging to reduce all of nature to ashes, Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swami assumed his cosmic form (Vishwaroopam) as the heroic saviour of the forest. Arrogant from Lord Brahma's boon that no divine weapon could kill him, Bhringasura fought against the Lord with all his strength. Wounded by Bhringasura's arrow on the battlefield, 400 Kuttichathans were born from the drops of blood trickling from Lord Vishnumaya's little fingers. Emerging to aid the Lord, these Kuttichathans absorbed the demon's deadly Brahmastras into their own bellies, sacrificing their lives. Witnessing the sacrifice of his brethren and hearing the agonizing cry of nature, sorrow and fury raged together within the Lord. At last, he raised the two sacred short sticks (kuruvadi) bestowed upon him by Goddess Parvati, the Cosmic Mother, in Kailasa. Mounted on a wild buffalo, charging through the clear forest stream, the Lord struck forcefully at the secret vital points on the demon’s chest with those sticks. The demon king, capable of fending off any conventional weapon, could not endure the blow from the divine sticks pulsing with maternal power. Bleeding and stripped of all pride, Bhringasura fell dead upon the forest floor. With unrighteousness vanquished and peace restored to both nature and the celestial realm, Lord Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swami took his place as the eternal guardian on the holy land of Kanadikavu—bearing the anxieties and afflictions of his faithful devotees on his own chest to protect them.

During that fierce and epic battle with Bhringasura, to protect the universe and their master Sree Vishnumaya Swami from the demon's deadly divine weapons, 400 Kuttichathans, born from the drops of the Swami's blood, manifested in identical forms. While ten of them embraced death by absorbing the enemy's divine weapons into their own bellies, the remaining 390 Kuttichathans became the living symbols of the Lord's triumph in battle. Bearing the heroic sacrifice of their fallen brothers in their hearts, these 390 Kuttichathans became the mighty forces that fought against unrighteousness as the obedient servants of Lord Vishnumaya. When the Lord fulfilled the purpose of his earthly incarnation and took his place at Kanadikavu as the guardian of his devotees, these 390 divine energies formed an invisible, protective shield around his holy shrine. Even today, it is the unseen presence of the Lord's beloved 390 Kuttichathans that intercepts the severe hardships and evils cast by enemies upon every devotee who visits Sree Vishnumaya Swami Temple, Thrissur, keeping them completely safe and secure. The confidence and shelter bestowed upon the devotees by the presence of these 390 divine energies—sanctified by their unwavering devotion and loyalty to their brethren—are beyond words.
